The Tiger is back, roaring and ready to leap with his favourite genre, action — something he does bade araam se. In Baaghi 2, the macho man is looking to push the envelope with the second instalment of the hit action franchise and hope that it too will hit the bull’s eye. In a freewheeling conversation with The Woods, Tiger tells us why he likes getting typecast as an action hero and what it felt like being wished by Sylvester Stallone.
The Woods: Baaghi was a hit. Does that add more pressure to make Baaghi 2 a hit as well?
Tiger: Yes, it does add to the pressure. The USP of Baaghi was action and we are pushing it now with this film. We have a good story and a great starcast. I know there is expectation and we will match up to it.
Why don’t we have any young action hero today apart from you?
I don’t know what is holding others back. Action is a universal language and has mass appeal. Most heroes of our film industry, who are massy, have been action heroes. What does Salman do? In my father’s time, Sanju baba (Sanjay Dutt), Sunny Deol or even Jackie Shroff (Tiger’s dad) were seen as macho heroes. So action is the appeal of our country. The romcom genre has only a multiplex sort of flavour. But in B and C centres, films like Dangal, Sultan and Baaghi do the runs.
But don’t you fear getting typecast doing action films time and again?
I love being typecast because I am getting an identity of an action or dancing hero. It makes me feel that I have got acceptance in some small way. I am happy that no one is attempting this space (action) and it gives me a chance. In Student of the Year 2 though, I am trying something else, which will be a complete contrast to my action image. How was your experience working with Disha Patani?
It was fun. We share a great relationship. So it is a comfortable feeling. Doing romance as well as emotional scenes with her are easy because there is an easy-going factor. She also has a very strong character in the film. Baaghi 2 is a story-and character-driven film and we have a great starcast — Randeep Hooda, Manoj Bajpai, Deepak Dobriyal…
Chopping your long locks for the movie must have been difficult?
I was emotional when I had to cut my hair. I was very scared because I had long hair for a prolonged time. When it was chopped off I felt naked. I didn’t feel like going out initially. But my new look was accepted by people. I think I gained the trust of more people because of my look. It got me more attention.
Anything that you wouldn’t do as an actor?
I wouldn’t do pornography as an actor.
You are starring in the remake of Rambo. Sylvester Stallone had tweeted good wishes for you. How did it feel?
It was amazing to get a reaction from Sylvester Stallone. I have grown up watching him. And there he was wishing you luck. What more can you ask for.
