Minutes after she was discharged from the state-run JJ Hospital after undergoing treatment for “drug overdose”, prime accused in the Sheena Bora murder Indrani Mukherjea on Wednesday alleged that she feared threat to her life inside the Byculla women’s prison where she is currently lodged.
Indrani voiced her apprehension about threat to her life, while she was being taken back to the Byculla prison from the JJ Hospital, where she underwent treatment for five days.
Forty-six-year-old Indrani replied in the affirmative when a journalist asked her if she feared a threat to her life.
Indrani, who had been rushed from the prison to the JJ Hospital on the night of April 6 after she complained of drowsiness and breathing problems, was diagnosed and treated for overdose of anti-depressants that had not been prescribed to her by doctors.
Quoting the reports of her urine that had been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory at Kalinia, a senior doctor attending on her at the JJ Hospital said: “The reports of her urine sample showed a significant increase in the level of benzodiazepine, a class of anti-depressants”.
Ahead of her discharge from the hospital, the hospital’s superintendent Dr Sanjay Surase said: “We carried out a detailed check up of her today. Her health has improved. We have told both the police and jail authorities that she can be taken back to the prison”.
“An X-ray of her lungs had earlier shown a patch, for which she was still on antibiotics. The treatment would continue for the next couple of days…. Those medicines were prescribed by jail doctors. It is up to them to continue with the same medicines or make any changes,” Dr Surase said.
The State Prison administration has, meanwhile, ordered an inquiry into Indrani’s sudden indisposition leading to her hospitalisation. “The IG ( Prison) will submit his report by the weekend,” a senior jail official said.
Indrani, who was arrested on August 25, 2015 for her alleged role in the murder of her daughter Sheena, is the key accused in the Sheena Bora murder case. Indrani’s former husband Sanjeev Khanna and her second husband Peter Mukherjea are two other accused in the case.
Sheena was daughter of Indrani from her first live-in partner Siddhartha Das. Incidentally, Sheena was in a live-in relationship with Rahul Mukerjea, the son of Peter Mukherjea — a relationship which the CBI has stated in its affidavit both Indrani and Peter had disapproved.
Indrani, Peter and Khanna are being currently tried in the special CBI court, where charges were framed against the three on January 17, 2017.
