11-year-old kidnapped, raped in Baramati; 42-year-old arrested

A 42-year-old man was arrested by the Vadgaon Nimbalkar police for allegedly kidnapping and raping a 11-year-old girl in Wanewadi area, Baramati taluka of Pune district on Saturday.

According to the police, the incident took place near a village on Saturday evening when the man allegedly accosted the girl, who had gone to buy groceries, and forced her to sit on his two-wheeler.

According to Bapu Bangar, deputy superintendent of police (DYSP), the incident took place between 6.30 pm and 11 pm on Saturday.

The accused forced her to sit on his two-wheeler and took her to a secluded place near Karanje bridge and allegedly raped her. Later, the girl was dropped by the accused at Wanewadi chowk, police said.

Meanwhile, as the girl didn’t return to her house, her family members and villagers launched a search to trace her. They spotted her at around 11 pm, the police said.

The girl, then, narrated the entire incident to the police and a manhunt was launched to trace the man.

A police team including officials from Baramati, Vadgaon Nimbalkar, local crime branch and other police personnel began searching for the accused. Based on CCTV footage and information from sources, the police nabbed the accused on Sunday morning.

“Police obtained the mobile phone number of the man from local sources. He was called by an undercover woman police constable who asked him to meet at a particular place, following which he was arrested,” the police said.

The police have charged the accused under Sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and relevant sections of the Atrocities Act.

Assistant police inspector Sachin Patil of Vadgaon Nimbalkar is investigating the case.
